It's a nightmare for every pet owner. Their little dog or cat friend has wandered off and become lost. Unless the dog or cat was close to home, the odds of finding the poor stray pet have usually been low until recently. With the advent of RFID technology, however, the pet microchip offers owners a way to greatly increase the chance of finding a missing companion.
What Is a Pet Microchip?
A pet microchip is a tiny transponder that can be injected near your dog's or cat's shoulders. It uses no power and has no batteries or other energy sources. A pet microchip is smaller than a grain of rice and is no more complicated than giving your pet an injection.
Where to Scan a Microchip
When a scanner passes over the microchip, it transmits data that can be used to identify your pet. Effective use of the system requires you to enter your contact data in one or more pet registries to keep track of microchip information and keep that contact data current. Almost all veterinarians and animal shelters are equipped with scanning devices. Any veterinarian routinely uses them to help identify lost and stray pets.
Once the data in the microchip is compared to the pet registry, the owner receives a call, text, or email noting that the pet has been found and where it is located. The owner can then make arrangements to pick the animal up. Other technologies, such as GPS collars, can help you find a stray pet, but collars can be lost or removed from the animal.
