Pet Acupuncture at Ferreira Animal Hospital
You might be surprised to discover just how many medical treatments that work on us humans can work equally well on our pets, despite some anatomical differences. You might be even more surprised to learn that one of these versatile techniques is acupuncture. Acupuncture's ability to ease pain and improve nerve function makes it an effective form of treatment for a wide range of conditions. That's why we're so pleased to offer pet acupuncture here at Ferreira Animal Hospital.
An Ancient, Versatile Healing Modality
Acupuncture in humans can be dated back at least 5,000 years into the ancient past -- but it's also been used on animals (including elephants) for at least 3,000 of those years. Today it even has its own certification organization, the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society.
How does it work? Traditional Chinese Medicine established a system of acupuncture points that could affect major "life energy" channels called meridians. They believed that the placement of needles at specific points could relieve blockages or misdirection of that life energy, restoring health and relieving pain. Today's researchers believe that these points correspond with neural "gateways" that govern nerve signaling and pain responses. The needles appear to trigger biochemical changes, causing the body to produce more natural painkillers called endorphins, while also helping to improve the body's internal communications. Since the nervous system controls everything from digestion to immune response, acupuncture is indeed a very versatile healing modality.
How Your Miami Veterinarian Uses Acupuncture
Either Miami veterinarian at our clinic (Dr. Ferreira or Dr. Baquero) may prescribe acupuncture for your pet, either on its own or in conjunction with other forms of care. It can prove very helpful for such diverse issues as incontinence, vision problems, allergies, and systemic health challenges. But it may be most well-known as a drug-free means of reducing both acute and chronic pain. If your pet is struggling with degenerative joint trouble, pain from an acute injury, or post-surgical pain, acupuncture could be exactly what he needs to feel better the safe and natural way.
Like humans, pets tend to tolerate acupuncture quite well. Once we have decided that your pet's condition can helped through this technique, we can proceed directly to the initial acupuncture session. Your pet might experience as light twinge from the needles, but the feeling of symptom relief that typically follows should prove extremely comforting.
