How and why you should clean your dogs ears at home.

Ear cleaning is a crucial part of the monthly care regiment for your pup. Certain dog breeds are more prone to ear infections then others. How often you clean your dogs ears depends on, how many times in the past your dog has gotten inner ear infections, and if your dog has floppy ears they will be more susceptible to infection due to the trapped moisture and dirt. however, upright ears need to be cleaned less frequently due to the increased airflow. Cleaning your dog’s ears at home is easy to do with the right supplies and techniques. even if your dog is not prone to infections, its still a good idea to be doing cleaning when the inside of the ear starts to become dirty. 0216054001539701231.jpg

Cleaning your dogs ears will also help prevent ear mites and other skin conditions that can develop in the inner ear, as well as earwax build up. Frequent cleans will help keep an infection at bay but you do not want to clean the ear so often that it becomes irritated.


  1.  Get started by gathering cotton balls or gauze and a vet-approved ear cleaner. You can buy ear cleaners from your vet, at pet-supply stores or online. talk to your ensure it’s gentle and safe for your use on your pet.
  2. be prepared to clean up any mess that may be made during the cleaning. Dirty cleaning solution can drip out of your dogs ears.
  3. To clean the ears, squeeze a little bit of ear cleaner into the ear and let it drip down into the ear canal. Gently massage the base of the ear to activate the cleaner and help it break down wax and debris. allow your dog to shake his head, 
  4. Gently wipe the outer ear flap and inside the ear with a cotton ball  as far down you as can, using the cotton ball and your finger. Keep wiping until your cotton balls come back clean. Pet ear cleaners contain drying agents. Cleaner left in the ear will dry on its own
  5. If your dog has an ear infection and needs medication, apply it after the ears are clean and wiped out.
