Vaccinations

At Ferreira Animal Hospital in Miami, we believe that vaccinations throughout your pet’s life are important to providing good health and happiness during all their life stages.  Several diseases can shorten your cat or dog’s life.  Our staff is educated and very knowledgeable about your pet’s overall health based on their specific breed and unique needs.

Why Should I Vaccinate My Pet?

Pet vaccinations help protect your pets from numerous diseases, such as parvovirus, rabies, distemper, Bordetella, and feline leukemia.  For those with several pets or who visit dog parks, vaccinations will help reduce the spread of infectious diseases to the animal population. Some vaccinations can even prevent the spread of zoonotic diseases, like rabies and leptospirosis, and protect the humans in the family.

What Vaccines Does My Pet Need?

Vaccines are a good booster to a pet’s health and prepare the body's immune system to fight the invasion of disease-causing organisms.  Core vaccines for dogs include distemper, rabies, and parvovirus. Vaccines that aren’t core are only given based on the exposure risk and include Borrelia burgdorferi, Bordetella bronchiseptica, and Leptosira bacteria.  Feline distemper (panleukopenia), rhinotracheitis, and rabies are core vaccines for cats, and non-core vaccines for include feline immunodeficiency virus, feline leukemia, Chlamydophila felis, and Bordetella.

How Can a Veterinarian Help?

Our veterinarian will be able to determine vaccination schedules for your pet.  Your pet’s specific schedule depends on the pet’s age, environment, type of vaccine, lifestyle, and medical history.  Every state has its own laws covering vaccinations like rabies.  In some states, rabies vaccinations are required to be updated yearly; in other states, it’s given every 3 years.  Proof of rabies is important to keep up with because it is a mandatory vaccination.
