How Pet Acupuncture Benefits Your Pet

How Your Pet Can Benefit from Acupuncture Care Too

You've probably heard of acupuncture, and perhaps you've even tried it yourself. But did you know this form of therapy isn't limited to just humans? Pet acupuncture is becoming increasingly popular, and with good reason.

This treatment is not offered by every veterinary practice in the region, and it is important to only go to an experienced animal hospital. At Ferreira Animal Hospital, we are proud to offer acupuncture care to pets across the Miami, FL area.

How Veterinary Acupuncture Works

To understand how our veterinary acupuncture will work for your pet, it's first important to understand how the practice works in general. Acupuncture involves sticking a series of small needles just below the surface of the skin and leaving them there for a predetermined amount of time while the patient relaxes. Acupuncture may be full-body, or it may only be performed on certain sections or body parts. When done correctly, no pain is felt (any discomfort should only be a minor, tolerable pinching).

Now, it's true that many people (particularly traditional practitioners) believe that acupuncture directly correlates to certain energies flowing throughout the body. However, more research is needed in this area, but in the meantime, science has already shown that acupuncture may indeed work by stimulating certain "acupoints" or trigger points just below the surface of the skin.

A sense of relaxation is often achieved, while other times the patient is left more energized or mobile. Many pet owners report their pets becoming increasingly more relaxed as their treatments continue. The number of treatments your pet needs will vary depending on their condition, their temperament, and of course their reaction to acupuncture in the first place.

What Kind of Conditions Can Acupuncture Treat in Pets?

For pets, acupuncture can help ease a stressed-out dog, or it could soothe the pain felt by an aging pet who is chronically ill. And especially when used in conjunction with other treatments, acupuncture may also help improve a variety of other health conditions. From musculoskeletal problems and neurological issues to gastrointestinal disorders and a wide variety in between, acupuncture can help soothe your pet's discomfort and improve their chances of recovery.

That said, all pets are different. It's important to consult with our veterinarian ahead of time about your pet's medical history and temperament to determine an acupuncture plan tailored to them for the best results.
